There are some Polish neighbours in my building. Before making friends with them, from time to time I had wanted to go to Poland. I remember what I learned from school the tragic history of this country, with its boundaries that kept changing. Just between 1791 and 1795 Poland was already partitioned by Russian Empire, Kingdom of Prussia (former Germany) and Austrian Habsburg Monarchy 3 times. With her own land becoming the battle ground of these invaders, and with her own citizens being forced to help different enemies to fight against each other to expand their territories inside Poland, after 1795, Poland almost did not exist for the next 123 years, until it was rebuilt in 1918, after the World War I ended.

Then in 1939 Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union planned to divide Poland once again. "Uprising" was the word I heard many times from the local tour guide during my short tour of Poland - Uprising against the Russians, Uprising against the Nazis, Warsaw Uprising & Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, etc..... Even if you have no knowledge of the Polish History, but just at hearing that over 6 million people, which was more than 20% of the Polish population, were gone during the World War II, and among them, most of the Polish Jews were exterminated by the Nazis, you can't say you're not touched by the ill fate of Poland and by the courage of the Polish people.
