I seldom would take a trip because of a church, but the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral in Sofia was the main reason I decided to go on a tour to Bulgaria, Serbia and Romania. After having seen so many churches, this cathedral is for sure not the most beautiful, not the tallest or the biggest, but definitely one of the most extraordinary. I even felt nervous for weeks worrying that it might rain when I got there and wouldn't have a chance to take a decent photo of it. I was blessed to get a shot of its dome shining in the October sun.

The city tour of Sofia only took one morning. In the afternoon we took the bus for almost two hours to the Rila mountains to see the Rila Monastery, another tourists attraction of Bulgaria. There's nothing fancy about these two masterpieces of architecture, nothing glamourous, but they just impress you with their uniqueness.

However, inside both the cathedral and the church of the monastery, photography is not allowed.
