In the large area in front of the Governorship building lays Turkey’s largest monument. It is called the Serife Baci monument in honor of her heroic deeds of carrying munitions from Inebolu on the Black Sea coast to Ilgaz half way point on the way to Ankara during the War of Independence of Turkey. During which journey she covered the weapons to protect them from snow instead of her baby and herself. They both perished upon arrival to Ilgaz. One of the many ladies of Kastamonu gave their lives for their country.
