South Florida was home to a number of U. S. Army missile bases for over two decades and a large number of residents living here never knew that they lived so close to nuclear tipped air defense missiles. Thank you to all who served protecting South Florida from possible airborne attack by aircraft and missiles. Our Army Nike and Hawk missile bases provided a deterrent against an easy attack on our populated areas and not too many regular folks even knew about the situation we were in.

Thanks to Charles D. Carter, originally from Miami and stationed with the U. S. Army at HM01 at the original missile site east of Red Road and north of NW 183rd Street in the early 60's, for providing virtually all the information on the missile launch areas and Integrated Fire Control (IFC) sites and many of the photos. Cool! I can remember looking out my front door on lot #6 in the very northwest corner of Haven Lakes Estates and seeing missile nose cones lit up by flood lights. It was often but they did raise them every once in a while. I can also remember when the Army would pull maneuvers on the north side of Snake Creek across from the base. They would have hospital tents, power carts, portable missiles, etc set up. They would even land helicopters in my back yard which was a 300' Corps of Engineers easement along Snake Creek.

Dan, thank you for posting your comments. Have you taken the National Park Service tour of the Everglades site that is offered December through April? I'm going on one in December and hope to take photos of the facility so I can put them up on this page. Don

I was stationed at A battery in the Everglades! There were no Missiles there then, it was still being built! I was there from Easter 75 till they shipped us to Vietnam in July 65. We spent most ofthe time at the AFB. I was a Sentry Dog Handler! I though they closed the Site down after we left, thatis waht they told us! The only people there were Sentry Dog Handlers. Ther was a HAWK SITE just outside the Park Main gate at the time, but they moved just after I got there. I went back to the Site 2 years ago after reading a new paper artical aboutit still being there. I live in SW Fl.
