Some of these photos are from the Florida State Archives which were cleaned up and adjusted for exposure. Others were generously contributed by individuals such as Martha Pierson, Rose Farrell Taylor, Alvin Lederer and others who we are grateful to.

I too, am a Miami native. Born at Jackson Mem. Hospital in '42. Lived all my childhood in Allapattah. Have reconnected w/a childhood friend from there and we have wonderful memories of living on 40th St., near or on NW 11th St. We both attended kindergarten at Moore Park, shifted back/forth between Santa Clara and Allapattah Elementry. Then on to Robert E. Lee for 2 years and finally to Miami Jackson. I remember skating at a rink on 7th Ave., next to the Strand Theater. Smelling the bread baking across from Lee every morning as well as the coffee beans somewhere nearby. We had move out of the Allapattah neighborhood the summer of '58 as the first East/West Express Way was coming. My dad appeared before the school board to gain permission for me to be allowed to stay and graduate at Jackson. They allowed me to do that. I'm VERY grateful to have grown up, attended schools, worked, married, had my children and became a volunteer for several important and interesting organizations. I'm very proud of being a Miamian!! Thank ou Don for all you've done and accomplished with your interesting photos of places we love.

I was born April 9th, 1941 at Jackson Memorial. Our home was on Andalusia Avenue in Coral Gables where I grew up and my folks stayed in the house until 1988 (50 years) when my dad passed away. I attended CG Elementary, Ponce Junior, and graduated CGHS in 1958. My sister Joan Phillips was in the first graduating class of CGHS in 1951 (9-11 grades at Ponce Senior), my brother graduated CGHS in 1955. What a beautiful place to grow up in the 40's and 50's. Salvadore Park across the street, the Desoto Fountain and Venetian Pool just blocks away. All within the shadow of the Biltmore Hotel (VA hospital back then). Saturdays at the Coral Theater (25 cents) all day (serial, 10 cartoons, western film (Roy and Dale maybe) and feature film. Then walk across street to bus terminal (when it was between Miracle Mile and Alcazar (?) and take bus home after quick trip through Holley's (sp) Five and Dime. I did have a question? Does anyone remember Exmoor School? It was located in the general area of Anderson Road and Anastasia in the 40's. I attended Kindergarten and First Grade there. The Hale (sp) sisters ran the school and a Mercury Woody station wagon would pick us up in the morning and deliver us back home in the afternoon. I love all the 40's photos. I remember the Seven Seas restaurant downtown Miami in particular. My dad worked in the Huntington Building across the street and Mom would load us up on the CG Miami bound bus on Friday afternoon and meet dad for dinner and then all drive home after picking up the old Desoto in adjacent parking lot. It was all grown up and we were on our best behavior ...or else!!! It was a delightful trip down Memory Lane this morning. Thanks Don

Your post will certainly be interesting for the many viewers of this site and I envisioned everything you said in my head. Born in 1942 at coral gables hospital, my grand mother had a rooming house on flagler and south miami avenue. Spent several years with my aunt and uncle at their rented house on south miami avenue and 1 street, 1 block from the miami river. We had to walk down an alley to get to the house, which was 1 bedroom living room, kitchen and bath. On one corner of the alley was a drug store and the other bldg was a dry cleaner. During the 2nd ww war brides and single ladies lived on the second floor of the dry cleaner bldg, with their enterence by stairs facing our house. Many times they acted as babysitters to my brother and i as we played in the "front yard " of our house by sitting on their 2nd floor cat walk in a kitchen chair. My uncle Ben Cheny had a marine service station just around the corner from where we lived and there was an ice house just next to his station. When I was about 6yo Uncle Bennie would take me over to the ice house, wrap me up in a fir lined parka and let me walk thru the ice house, what a wonderland. On Friday nite I was aloud to go to the drug store for an ice cream and to watch 1/2 hour of tv, that was the only tv around, the pharmists (TWO GUYS) were like grandfathers to me. Have gone back many times over the years and have taken pictures of the house and the clanging skyline of Miami from Uncle Bennies dock. It is all gone now but the wonderful memories of that place, time and the people will always be in my heart and mind and will bring smiles and warm feelings as i think of them.

Hi, I wonder if anyone remembers the name of the small grocery store that was located on the east side of N.W. 2nd Avenue and about 64th or 65th Street just a couple blocks past Edison School. This would have been in 1944-46 time frame. There was a drug store close by owned by a Mr. Jenkins. My mom and dad, now deceased worked there. We moved to Miami in 1945 and rented a house across from the store. Thanks. Virginia

If anyone knows anything about the Naval Dispensary please speak up and tell us more about it. Thanks! - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - I was born in 1944 on Miami Beach at the U.S. Naval Dispensary. Anyone know of this place or born there too? I have been searching online for any information about this place I was born. Found nothing. I went to Benjamin Franklin Elementary through the 6th grade, then on to Westview Jr. High for 7th and 8th grade. Then went to Thomas Jefferson Jr. High for 9th grade, was a new jr high and was the first graduating class. Then on to North Miami Sr High for 10-12th grade. There are so many memories of Miami and it has all changed so much. We lived off 4th Ave and 133rd Street. I remember when they started building I-95, me and my girlfriend rode our bikes on the dirt road. The memories of living there remain with me. Thank you, Don Boyd for this site. Moved to Miami from Arkansas in 1943, lived with my aunt and mother at 1792 SW 19th Street, near Shenandoah Jr. High and Shenandoah Park. Went to Coral Way 3-6 grade. Construction of the Rickenbacher Causeway provided excellent platforms to dive into Biscayne Bay while under construction. Bus service was excellent and I often rode to downtown, day or night. In hindsight, Miami was the world's greatest place to grow up. Buz Reynolds now lives in New Smyrna Beach, on Coronada Island North Beach.

I lived in the Elutherian Apartments in 1950-1951. It was located on the bay just north of downtown Miami. I may have the name spelled incorrectly. The structure was 2 stories and in a court yard shape. Would appreciate any information. Thanks

from 1942--45 I lived at 420 15th Street, a block from Collins and the beach. I think. My dad was a staff member of the AAFTTC and I'm writing about that era. What would help m e is to see a map of the area during WWII. I have been looking and I wrote to a a Miami Beach Historical group but so far nothing. I'm trying to specifically locate Hudson Apts. Casey's Oasis, one person said, it was in the Center of the Irish District, a local swimming pool and the closest movie theater to our house. As I understand it the numbers of the cross streets go up as you go north and that the current Miami Historical district only goes as far south as 20th…Meaning our place at the Hudson Arms would have been further south…Lastly I'm confused about Collins vs. Lincoln. Love your images…will appreciate any guidance you can give me. thanks, Bill from Brooklyn, now in California….

Hi Susan, I don't know of any big fan photos like you described but perhaps someone reading your comments knows of such a photo. I worked in a hot sweaty un-airconditioned factory owned by a family friend in the summer of 1965 and they had large fans to help cool the place but they were pole mounted and swiveled from side to side as I recall. But that was 20 years after the fans used when your dad worked at Southern Bell. Hopefully someone will speak up about having such a photo which I would be glad to put on this site. Don .

Hi: Was looking for a particular vintage item that had been used in the 40's at the Southern Bell office in Miami, and came across your site. I live in Key West, but was born in Miami in 1954. My parents were married in Miami in 1947 and my Dad had moved to Miami in 1939 and my Mom was there since she was a baby in 1927. Most all of my family was there at one time or another. The point is that I really enjoy your pictures. I have memories of it all in the late 50's. My grandmother's house in Allapattah is long gone. It was a different neighborhood then. My family now, are all gone. My parents died in the past few years, as have my aunts and uncles, great aunt, great-great-great aunt. My parents met when they were both working at Southern Bell in the 40's. My Dad had some massive fans that had been used there in the days before air conditioning. They were circular cages, maybe 4' high, and maybe 3' in diameter, and the fan rotated inside the cage. Does anyone remember these fans? I was telling a story to my husband and thought I'd surely find a picture of one online but I see nothing! Does anyone know of this item?

My Great Grandfather came to Miami in 1896 and had a Boarding House in Lemon City(Biscayne and 50th) He also worked on the James Deering estate(Viscaya) as a carpenter his name was George Washington Anderson, he had 3 Daughters and one son, Mary May Bell Anderson Hibbs was my Grandmother and I believe that she was born in Miami in 1901, she married my Grandfather Fred Ezel Hibbs from Hope Arkansas and they had 8 kids(one died at birth) my Father was born in 1930 in Miami his name was Gerald E. Hibbs Sr. and I was born in 1949 at Jackson Memorial and now live in Port Saint Lucie Fl.

My father-in-law spent a great deal of time in the Miami area in the 1930-1950 time period. He passed away several years ago and we found several pictures taken in that area. One picture shows him working as a barber in Muzzey's North Orange Barber Shop. We would appreciate any information anyone could give up on the barber shop or him. My parents have a VERY large aerial photograph of Biscayne Bay, probably from 50's or 60's (i mean it takes up a full wall-like area over a fireplace!). I have been trying to find out if it's of any value. It is in very good condition. Can anyone point me in the right direction? We live in High Springs FL now, just north of Gainesville. Thanks!

Ginger, I have never seen a map with that roadway designation and I don't remember the roadway ever called that but I've only been here since 1951 so there's a lot of things I don't know. I used to live at NE 86th east of the boulevard in the early/mid 50's so it was only four blocks away but I was only a little kid back then. I suggest that you visit HistoryMiami downtown and see if you can find an old map supporting your position and take a digital photo of it if you find what you need. HistoryMiami just had a large Map Fair this past weekend if I recall correctly. Don

Hi, I live on E. Dixie Hy at NE 86th St. in the Shorecrest neighborhood on the Upper Eastside of Miami and have a personal project of trying to have NE 82nd St. at Biscayne B'lvd dual designated to reflect the current name and the original name which I remember seeing on an old map as E. Little River Parkway. I've already put in a request to the City/County for this, but I can't find the map to confirm this name. Don, maybe you or on of your bloggers could help me find the map with the name on it. I've only lived here for 14 years but love it and am a member of a Preservation Association. I ran across a picture of the Franklin Oil Fire in a photo collection of my deceased mother and father. I am trying to place the time of the fire. It was sometime in the mid to late 40's, probably around 45-47, I believe. Does anyone know or remember anything about it. It occurred in the area just north of 21st Terrace and 29th Avenue NW.

I ran across a scrapbook of photos from a vacation my mother took with her parents to Hibiscus Island in 1936. The notation on the back says Yacht Apartments. The notes on some of the photos also refer to the July 1936 hurricane. Several people appear frequently in the photos, one is Bobby Boyle who appears to be about 14 of 15 years old at the time. A Google search found that there was a Miami Police Officer named Robert Boyle that was killed in a motorcycle accident in 1936, maybe Bobby Boyle's father? Also, an always barefoot Dr. Geringer shows up wearing a lab coat in a lot of the photographs. Any idea where the Yacht Apartments were located on Hibiscus Island and any clues regarding Bobby Boyle and the barefoot doctor? I remember my mother mentioning that they saw or met Al Capone when they were staying on Hibiscus Island. I would really like to find out more about the island and the people. Scott

Jeanne Ledbetter...Hi, I know Edison Center very well. My mother taught school at Edison Jr. High & had to shop for food for cooking class at Frederick's. I, precisely, remember the GREAT hot dogs & birch beer...only about 10 cents each & there was even a bowl of chopped onion for the hot dog...really enjoyed it. I attended St. Mary's School & Notre Dame Academy. My mother passed away in a car accident on Sept. 10, 1976, after teaching at Edison for 20 years. It is so great to reminisce with you. I am looking for a photo of The Shack bar, located on NW 2nd Ave. near 58th St. about 2 blocks south of the Edison Sr. High School auditorium. Edison seniors had off-campus lunch privileges and many would congregate at the bar's adjoining structure to eat Kosher hot dogs and hamburgers. Time frame: 1945 - 1960. The bar sat next to a motorcycle shop and across the street from Tommy Fillya's Atlantic gas station.

Jeanne Ledbetter, I remember Edison Center well. You had Frederich's Market, a Royal Castle, and Lots of other businesses, at and near the busy intersection of N. W. 62nd St. and N. W. 7th Ave. And also nearby, you had Edison Park Elementary School , Miami Edison JR. High School, and Miami Edison Senior High School. Edison Center, was the main shopping district, besides Downtown Miami, for all residents of Lemon City, and all surrounding areas. And The Urmey Hotel Downtown, Had An Old Wooden Platform, with ropes hooked to it , as a dumb waiter, to send deliveries up to the kitchen, from the ground, in the back of the hotel, on the back lawn. I know that , because in The early 70's , I Made deliveries there. Guest.

URMEY HOTEL 1944 Miami Kiwanis Club invited Miami Sr. H.S. Key Club members as guests at their weekly luncheons. Summers: Miami YWCA sponsored weekly dances for high school students, on the 2nd floor. I remember both well.

The Urmey was only demolished a couple of years ago. It was located directly south of Gusman Center (old Olympia Theatre). My neighbor, Mr. Napier, ran the barber shop in the hotel during the 30's and 40's.
