A sub species of the more common Dark-eyed Junco (Snowbird), the Oregon race is a resident of the Pacific coast. It is normally found from Alaska south to the California Baja. A rare find in Pennsylvania although usually reported most years.
I discovered this bird November 22, 2009, feeding on millet spilled on the deck floor just outside the kitchen window of a residence I was visiting. Unable to open the door for fear it would spook the bird, I took these photos through the window. After checking periodically throughout the afternoon, I did not see it again.
The Junco came to the deck again on the morning of the 23rd and without the sun on the windows I got some better photos of it. (below)
Saw the bird again on December 06, 2009, same location.
The "Oregon" was seen again on January 9, 2010 at the same location.
********** "Bob,The Pennsylvania Ornithological Records Committee (PORC) has reviewed your report of Oregon Junco in West York 22 November 2009 and has accepted the record. Thank you for contributing to the documentation and review process."
2 Dark-eyed Oregon Juncos seen in my yard in Monmouth County, New Jersey on April 25, 2011. I believe one was male, the other female. I do get a lot of migrants in my yard (lots of grass, shrubs , trees and bird feeders), but have never seen a Junco here!
