I noticed this bird at my feeders several weeks before I took these photos on January 12, 2008. At the time I assumed it was a Purple Finch but the longer it stayed around, the more suspicious I got and began to take better looks at it.
After much discussion on several birding lists and comments from many very knowledgeable birders, almost all agree that this is a Male House Finch albeit an erythristic aberrant and possibly having a genetic abnormality also. This conclusion can not be construed as 100% positive without genetic testing. The condition, also known as carotenistic, is derived from an extraordinary access to carotenoids in the diet during molt.
