23rd - "One Of These Days"

Cheltenham, Glos

(from the 1971 album Meddle)

Nick Mason's much distorted lyric to this is of course "One of these days I'm going to cut you into little pieces" but I don't trust myself with knives after the unfortunate broccoli-chopping episode in October (ahem!) so I've had to rely on the comparative safety of a claw hammer and a four-inch masonry nail!

Two shots here - one of me sitting reading, one of me standing behind me looking downright scary; both illuminated with off-camera flash. The two pics were opened into CS3, with the scary one added as a layer to the sedentary one. A bit of fettling with the Eraser tool, a smidge of the Move tool to align the shots; then I flattened the two layers. I B&Wed the image, adding a strong custom Curve to really bring out the contrasts, then another with a lithograph treatment. Next up, a bit of Diffuse Glow; lastly the merest hint of Shape Blur (but not over the book title!) for that 'film noir' look. Lastly, saved and resized for Pbase :o)

Rest assured I didn't hurt myself, but I did lose my place in the book...

This is one of the best examples of this type of treatment I have ever seen. Terrific work, Doug.

Brilliant! But how in the world do you find the time to do these shots? Are you unemployed or do you sneak outta bed at 2:am to take these? ;-)
Jola Dziubinska24-Nov-2009 00:20

Fim Noir excellence! You are a master of the genre, and very creative with cs3. The first thing I notice was the sharp text of the book, really catches ones eyes. Vµ

A well nailed, 'noir' image. I guess it's too late to say, careful with that hammer, Eugene.
I'm really enjoying the layered work you are using, Doug. Just like The Floyd.

Scary, very scary. If I were your Psychiatrist I could analyze this for quite a long time, but luckily I'm not. An amazing shot Doug, fits the song perfectly and I see you're still reading "Greenmantle". :) "V"
