This Iron Box is the second jail built in San Diego.
The first jail was built of brick and mortar and after some escapes a new jail was ordered.
The new jail was completed in 1861 and placed at the rear of the first court house. Described as an iron cage 6 x 9 feet, it weighs 7000 lbs.
