Robins, Forktails, Chats and Thrushes
The robins differ from the thrushes in being smaller in size and living under cover; after the Straw-headed Bulbul, the three best songster in Borneo all belong to this group. The Forktails are confined to South-East Asia; in appearance, they have a superficial resemblance to wagtails, but differ in structure and habits. The chats are worldwide in distribution, and are easily recognised in the field by their habit of flirting the tail and at the same time flicking it open fanwise for a moment; they also bob and flick their wings. They perch conspicuously and fly low with rapidly moving wings and jerky flight. In Borneo however they are represented only by four vagrants, and one regular migrant.

The typical thrushes differ from the preceding group principally in their larger size, and in eating fruit as well as insects; berries form a considerable portion of their diet. They feed much on the ground, where their long legs enable them to hop with speed and facility. In Borneo, however, they are not familiar birds of the countryside as they are in much of the northern hemisphere; we have one winter visitor from Siberia, one resident found on the highest mountain of Sabah, and several rare ground thrushes of old jungles. Whistling thrushes are found in East and South-East Asia; they are large dark thrushes of semiaquatic habits, living along small streams and feeding mostly n snails.
