Tortugas: Our Lady of Guadalupe

Tortugas is a small community on the outskirts of Las Cruces, New Mexico. The people of Tortugas are of mixed Native American and Mexican heritage. Their annual commemoration of Our Lady of Guadalupe includes a series of dances performed by residents of Tortugas as well as community dancers from elsewhere in New Mexico. The performances are a good example of syncretism -- combining the ideology and symbolism of two different religious traditions, Native American and Mexican Catholicism.
