These two ancient churches sit within feet of each other. One is Catholic, the other Protestant. Upon considering this fact, Dad said, "Hmm. I wonder if they sit there and throw rocks at each other." I've been laughing about that image ever since.
St. Servaas (Servatius) is the patron saint of Maastricht. He died there in 384 AD, and his tomb survives in the crypt under St. Servaas Basilica. The church also has a treasury with numerous artifacts dating from the 4th - 8th centuries. Some of these artifacts belonged to St. Servaas himself.
The present St. Servaas Basilica was built mostly in the 12th century. St. Janskerk (St. John's Church) was built mostly in the 13th. Both are incredible.
