It's So Frustrating to Shoot Roses

When I presented my gallery "Tulips For Those, Who Hate Flower Shots", I've said that tulips are my second favorite flower after roses. I had the roses gallery "Portraits of Roses" before but never was happy with it. I thought I should start re-working it, using Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 macro lens, that I love so much. And I did. But I found myself in the strange situation. Whatever I tried to do to make the shots of roses interesting, I always felt some kind of frustration that they did not convey the beauty of the subject. Shoot roses is difficult, they are mostly not that rainbow-like colored like many other flowers, but they are all about a shape. So I decided to concentrate mostly on line, shapes and shades. I still feel a bit frustrated, but decided to bring my work to you attention.

Yah, that might be good idea to drop shooting roses with CMOS, it deosn't deliver true sense of 3D, LOL ! BV

I am a floral designer doing a lot of weddings in different colors and more often than not use roses because that is what the brides want. I Love your pictures of roses. They look natural in their full beauty and I can even with most pictures determine which kind of rose it is. Go to google and put in keyword rainbow rose - you will be amazed at what you see - they are a new variety and grown mostly in Holland and in one rose you have several different colors including greens and blues. If you are interested in a picture of them shoot me an email and I send a pic of them.

Well looks like you are pretty alone in your frustration given the many thumbs up gallery comments. But to add a point there is a high similarity in the the images presented. Might be interesting to see what else this fine lens can do when you frame to add more fore and background elements against the main flower subject, and crank up the directional lighting. That said I'm voting.

Your rose images seem quite fine. But if you're of the mind that you still find yourself feeling somewhat frustrated, then remember this: photography is not just about shooting "things", but rather how things look under any given set of momentary lighting conditions -- because it is the lighting which visually "shapes and sculpts" the subject matter of our images. So one day shoot when it's cloudy. Another day shoot in early morning light. Another day, shoot with harsh midday lighting. And on another day, shoot with direct evening sunlight but with the addition of using some silver or gold reflector. All of these different lighting conditions will change the "shape and sculpting" of your roses, and so perhaps afford you a greater variety in the look of your images if this is what you most want. But it seems to me that what you have now is also pretty good. CJ

I have the same lens and the same frustration! Although i have only been experimenting with macro for a few months now I am so glad you mentioned your frustration because i thought it was me that was doing something wrong and was initially disappointed with the lens! Now i know its possibly the flower and I should try other flowers! Thanks for sharing!

I’m getting drowned into a deep beautiful ocean of roses, which make me also nearly drunk with their virtual inebriant scent… I’m not able to take decent macro-photography, so I usually skip it. But I think I can recognize when it’s used in a personalized way and I can perceive the beauty of certain images. I already knew you were an excellent photographer; this opinion is more and more confirmed. Marisa

A creative and inspiring gallery! I know the frustration. It seems so difficult to do something unique with a rose, but you have succeeded in presenting an entire gallery of interesting perspectives.
