Barack's Brack

I don't know if President Obama sampled a slice of this brack (rich bread) launched in his honour
by an enterprising bakery, but he did drink a pint of Guinness when he visited the small Co Offaly
village of Moneygall, from where his grandfather's grandfather emigrated during the famine.
Up to 100,000 people crowded into College Green in the heart of Dublin to hear him
speak of his Irish roots and of the close links between Ireland and America.
Unfortunately fears that the ash cloud from the Icelandic volcano may disrupt flights
means that President Obama is flying to London tonight and won't be staying over in
Ireland.

That is marvellously enterprising. I understand that his visit was quite the occasion, as it should be! V

Funnily enough, I have a distant Irish cousin who works in the Trinity College library. I wonder if he saw him?

Great - now that I would love to try.

Hooray for Barack!
And when the ash clears... please send bread!

I was happy that he visited Ireland. I have Irish roots too. :)

An interesting story told by this pleasing image. I like those spots of purple against the darker background.

Such a shame he had to cut it short, well his 1/32nd irish according to the press so he must be coming back. Unless it was the weather that put him off and not the ash cloud ;-)

certainly an enterprising baker yer man Pat...the phrase 'country style' seems a tip of the stetson to American influence, so perhaps there is a link, however tenuous...somehow 'O'Bama' doesn't look or sound Irish, despite his loquacious style...still it's just a year before the next U.S. election, so can't blame the man for trying to embelish his street cred...never did hear if he found his missing apostrophe..

Haha, he stopped in Buffalo and had chicken wings! No one was quite this enterprising though.

Excellent, give me a slice with loads of butter on top.
Keith O'Brien23-May-2011 22:12
Hmmm, wonder if I've got Irish roots??? ;)
Doug Cruden23-May-2011 21:36
It seems everybody in the world has a claim to be Irish - no disrespect, but I have to laugh when every recent US president feels the need trace their Irish roots...still, I hope the brack tasted nice :o))...

Another successful head of state visit, though this one was less formal and not as blessed with good weather.
