my eyes

" These eyes have a story to tell...
They have learned so much, seen so much joy, so much grief.
These eyes have known the heartbeat of love, a line that divides, made of blood.
These eyes have been filled with oceans of truthfulness,
and the depths of beauty that lie within the silence of despair.
These eyes are reaching out to touch. Do you see them? Hear them? "

(Many thanks to everyone once again for your tremendous support
and overwhelming response to my previous SP.)

Whenever I come back to see this photo or pass by, one thought comes in my mind and cannot resist to tell it, again and again. This is one of the most expressive and artistic photos in Pbase, and one of my very favourites.

Those deep penetrating eyes are truly reaching out to touch. Yes I can see them, even hear them. Not only are eyes the windows of our souls, they help us to perceive the beauties as well as grief of this physical world. Ai Li, this is a very poignant image.

I have to vote for this Ai Li as one of my all time best captures on pbase. I had to bring the image size down to 'medium' in order to get the full impact.. and what an impact !! I could go on for ages about the levels of meaning I am constructing from this image. .. this is absolutely BRILLIANT .. voted without hesitation. KMc

excellent treatment! the catchlight in the eyes are especially well done.

I come to this photograph late, Ai Li. It has already received a well-deserved outpouring of praise and insights. You hide your own nakedness here (read "vulnerability") with an abstracted summary of who you are -- a large print of a picture of your own eyes. It is said that the eyes are the windows to the soul, and the soul we see revealed here seeks support, understanding, and self-knowledge. As Roberto said, you look straight from your soul to ours. You incongruously create an abstraction within an abstraction: the body is only implied, and the face in the portrait is but a partial face, without a mouth to speak, forcing the eyes to tell your story by themselves. There is also a powerful juxtaposition of skin tones here -- what we see of your body remains white and fragile, a metaphor of innocence. Yet the face is darkened, either by under exposure or dark makeup, launching the eyes out at us with shocking impact and meaning. Your concept is fresh, and your execution superb. Your blend abstraction, incongruity and human values together to express yourself forcefully and provocatively. Nobody who sees this image, Ai Li, will ever forget it, because all of us have once been or will be where you are here.

Thanks to you, Ai Li!

Interesting that the scale of the arms somewhat fits to the scale of the portrait, making a delightful confusion. Intense glance. Superb work. GMV.
