The photograph is wonderful, but I just took the time to read the comments. If only I could have put things so eloquently, again WONDERFUL. If only Nikon could see this, it would be the PERFECT ad for their cameras in all the best magazines in the world.

The hands clasped and strapped, head bowed and hidden... a struggle to free the inner creativity, yet there's restrain from "photographer's block" as Phil so succinctly puts it. I can empathise the emotion involved that challenges every photographer to better oneself. All the best in this photo journalistic experience, Ai Li.

Special thanks to Ade, my big SP fan (^*^) and for his "ping" that led new viewers to my picture. My sincere thanks to Shannon and Duncan too for their inspiring SPs, and most importantly to Phil for giving me the challenge. THANK YOU ALL!!!

I come late to this Ai Li -- I've been working all morning on responses to the many insightful comments you’ve just posted on my recent New York City photos. This thought provoking self-portrait has already drawn many thoughtful observations. Jenene has picked up on your reference to my own oft-used words "we are what we photograph and we photograph what we are" (I did not coin that phrase, but I try to live by it and use it often in my teaching.) Jenene says you seem to be a prisoner of your own passion for photographic art, and judging from the symbolic nature of the bonds that lock your wrists, I would agree. You say you need to both free and find yourself in order to move to a new level as an artist, and yet you don't seem to know how you will get there. Your bare body is a vulnerable body, and "Photographer's block" is most certainly a state of vulnerability. You abstract yourself here – honing yourself down to no clothing, half a body, and invisible face. What is left of you seems locked and blocked. Yet you give us a hint of where you are heading. Your hands are folded in an expression of infinite patience. You seem to be considering rebuilding yourself from scratch. As you come to learn who Ai Li really is, you will discover where her art will take her, as well as all of us who may make the journey with you. You give us more than a self-portrait here, Ai Li. You boldly bond yourself to both your art and to your state of mind, and in the process you challenge us to examine the very essence of a photographic artist.

A great start - my interpretation of your comment below the photo is it's intended to be a mix of self-exploration and self-definition; if that's right you've hit the target with this. Clear that a lot of thought has been put into it. And it's really inspiring in that it's the kind of photo that gets me thinking about just what you can convey with one picture and makes me want to learn more and more...and quickly. Bravo!

Thanks for the dedication on the gallery.

Yes - there is an influence of Shannon`s style! Surprising opener for your new gallery worth to wait for!...free yourself - but chained with the NIKON ribbon? Is this a symbol for an accepted addiction? You first have you find yourself before you are enabled to free yourself. HA - i love your mindblower Ai Li! I`m very impatient to see more...
Guest 18-Aug-2006 18:47
Wow, you clever little miss you! Very very very well done! Can't fault your ideas or expertise at all ~V~ xxxx

One of the very best SP's ive ever seen! A+ all around. This should be on the cover of a photography addiction mag (one id be in :) LOL) I love the high key effect. It also helps that both photogog and model make a great combination!
I love JSWATERS comment! i too look forward to the rest :))

I am impressed, Ai Li. There is so much implied and still hidden in your self portrait. In reference to Phil's words, we find the photogragher, handcuffed by the very tool she wields so beautifully, struggling to break free and explore new ground. We also see the woman who searches to define the many sides of her self, bared to fully expose herself to all possible opportunities. We don't see your face, we are waiting to see which version of self, which abstraction of Ai Li, which essence you will present to us next. Good luck on your journey. If this is how you begin, I can't wait for more. I'm humbled.
Jenene
