Sawfly larvae, Nematus sp. ?

Near the Ottawa River. These larvae on a trembling aspen leaf, may be in the Genus Nematus. Sawflies are in the same family as wasps and bees (Hymenoptera), and are NOT flies, despite the confusing name (sawflies). When disturbed, sawfly larvae like this, wave their rear ends in the air. Most sawflies feed like these ones, in groups, on the edge of a leaf.

So interesting the way they have outlined the leaf. I hope they don't kill the trees. Great document shot. V

They do have a feeling for a good framing!

Quite artistic....although the leaf would most likely disagree if it could.

Cool shot! It is so terrible and beautiful at the same time/ V

Neat shot, Christine. We have hibiscus sawflies that destroy my big beautiful hibiscus plants every year. Makes me crazy! They look totally different than these dark larvae. Nice find.

Such an interesting group of larvae. I like the way they are edged around the leaf. V.

Say that's not true - incredible what you see on your tours!
Could not imagine a more beautiful decoration for a leaf...

A destructive horde on the attack! Looks like half the leaf is gone. V

Looks like leaking tar. Where's a defender?

I had the same thought as David; I'd be trembling if these larvae were feasting on me. Excellent capture of what I think will turn into a not too attractive insect (from pictures I have seen). V.

Cool find and capture, Christine. I like how they've framed what remains of the leaf.

no wonder the aspen is trembling...it's completely surrounded and under a major attack...captivating moment..
