European paper wasp (<em>Polistes dominula</em>)
29-OCT-2011 Christine Hanrahan

European paper wasp (Polistes dominula)

This was one of about 20 paper wasps in a nest box at the Fletcher Wildlife Garden. I had checked the box in the summer and no bird was nesting in it. I checked it again in late August and even the wasps were not there. But since then, a nest has been constructed on the inside side wall of the nest box. It was a cool day when I checked the box, but sunny, and all the wasps were clustered near the back opening seeking the sun. This one was bold enough to step out onto the ledge.

Oh my, this guy looks downright evil, like a super villain of some sort! But it's a great shot! I read about wasps mid-summer and started being on the lookout for the European paper wasp because I didn't know we had them here. I don't think they are very common?

A familiar site. I chase them out of my bluebird boxes all the time. Nice capture. You made him look huge!
