The Pechora Pipit, as its name suggests, breeds in boggy tundra in the area around the Pechora River in northern Russia. The Pechora River flows into the Barents Sea west of the Ural Mountains. It winters in SE Asia. It is therefore a rare vagrant to W Europe. Of the 64 British records between 1950 and 2004, 59 were in Scotland and 57 of these were from Shetland and Fair Isle making the Pechora Pipit very much a northern isles speciality.
The bird photographed here was present for a week favouring some gardens in the village of Baltasound.
