This is the heron in the previous picture, which Tim took while I was photographing him. I was standing around four feet from him, which didn’t seem to bother him as he just continued fishing while I looked on. It was fascinating to get such a close-up view.
The camera was fully zoomed, but the picture isn’t cropped at all.
Best to view in "Original" because other versions resized by Pbase are definitely unsharp.

After Tim spotted a great blue heron in an artificial lake on the National Mall the other day, we went down there on Wednesday armed with cameras to try to find him again. Not only did we find the heron, but also several cormorants and countless geese and ducks. It was pretty amazing to see the heron and cormorants on the mall as there aren’t any large fish in the water, but they seemed to make do with hunting tiny prey.
Needless to say, we took a lot of pictures over the course of a couple of hours so this gallery will be ongoing for a while.
