Before and after: Ulugh Beg Madrasah in disrepair

I’m just slipping this in here, an old photograph of the Ulugh Beg Madrasah pictured below, fallen into disrepair. I couldn’t tell when this photo was taken. If you look closely, you can see the original tilework was faithfully reproduced when the building was restored.

The Ulugh Beg Madrasah, or Islamic school, one of three in the Registan, was built from 1417-1420 and was one of the best clergy universities of the Muslim Orient in the 15th century.

It is quite amazing, the difference. The repair work is remarkable. I wonder what happened to all the little structures below the building. You'd never know looking at the modern photo that there was all that life surrounding it. V
