1970s - Carl F. Slade Funeral Home on W. 49th Street at W. 13th Lane (NE corner), Hialeah

W. 49th Street and 13th Lane, Hialeah, Florida

Thank you to Daniel Worth for contributing this image. It opened in the early 1970's and the funeral home at 800 Palm Avenue was closed. There's something weird about this image in that there is sky where it shouldn't be on the far left side to the left of the building. Perhaps someone decided to paint out a garbage truck with sky or something?

The back of the postcard states:
CARL F. SLADE FUNERAL HOME

I used to hang with Mike (Dennis) and Rick Slade in the early 70's during my Hialeah REACT days. Rick was extremely helpful when my father passed in '79 and he took care of all arrangements for me until I could fly back to Miami as I was then living in Nashville.

I believe Mike became a police officer with Miami or Miam Beach. And if I remember correctly he did a stint work with the Hialeah PD as a ID technician.

I use to live right behind this place around 1978/79 with my mom in a small apartment complex(two stories) beige in color. I remember the Towers next door for I had a friend I use to work with (New England Oyster House) that use to live in the Towers

I know the Slades very well and yes Danny currently lives in New York. As for the pic of Mr. Slades' -- lovely man -- funeral home, it was not a garbage can etc that was airbrushed out, (how cynical we are) but an apt. complex. I believe Palm Springs Towers, which is still there. I lived in that complex for a couple of years in the 70s, right behind the Funeral Home. Ironically, it wasn't until I moved out that I met the Slade family. The corner is now I think a Bank of America. He also had a funeral home on Palm Ave. No longer there. Mr. Slade did a lot for the Hialeah community. There is a park named after him in Hialeah.

I finally got by there tonight on a special trip. It's on the corner of W. 13th Lane and 49th, on the north side, east of some oddball gas station that used to be the Perry family's Gulf station in the 60's. It's a bank now and the west end is the drive-thru window area for the bank. The small second story can be seen better from the back street.

Hello Don. Were you able to get over to this area to see if this building is still standing? Let us know what you find out whenwever you are able. I had hoped that by now someone from the Slade family would weigh in on some of the history and details of the Slade Funeral Home business. I'm especially interested in the Bird Road location too, and I have often wondered if there was a connection early on to the Brake-Saunders Funeral Homes in Miami.

We believe it was at the corner of W. 14th Avenue and 49th, on the north side, east of a former Gulf Station.

Where exactly on 49th Street was this funeral home located? I remember the building clearly, but not the location.

In the very late 1960's Mr. Slade opened the first funeral home in Hialeah to serve the Cuban population. It was on Red Road (W. 4th Ave) right next to Hialeah Lumber. He renovated a building formerly used as a discoteque. It sat right against the corner with the sidewalk right against the front wall. It was named something like "Funeraria Cubana" - something like that.
