1940's - Harold and Dorothy Hubbard in front of Hubbard's Kubbard on Hialeah Drive

Hialeah Drive and E. 1st Avenue, Hialeah, Florida

Thank you to Linda Adleman Bolinger for supplying this great old image of her grandfather Harold Hubbard and grandmother Dorothy Hubbard at their popular Hubbard's Kubbard in Hialeah which was on Hialeah Drive and East 1st Avenue. Across Hialeah Drive was Mr. McGee's Sinclair gas station. Linda says that when her mother Jean met her father Pete Adleman in 1937, her grandfather Harold owned the corner across 1st Avenue and he built an outdoor bowling alley with six lanes. He later sold the property for the Hialeah-Miami Springs Bank.

I was three years old when my family moved to W. 16th street in Hialeah. My father had also bought property on Peterpike Road out of Hialeah off of HWY 27. My brother's name was Dennis King. I was almost five years old when we moved out there on the cattle farm. It seemed ao desolate for young kids. Elouise Corbin (later married to Jack Dempsey) and her family lived in one of the rental properties on the farm. Elouise became my life-long friend. She passed in August of 2020 and I miss her everyday. Peterpike Road became W. 49th street. I remember Hubbard's Hubbard just as Randy McGee remembers and as a child I remember the Seminole bar....long time memories. I also well remember the park with he band shell, the department store, ice cream store, Royal Castle and the old courthouse. It was a great place to grow up. I graduated in 1960 from Hialeah High, joined the Air Force and retired Dept. of Veterans Affairs after 33 years. Life has been good to me.

My grandfather, C.T. Mcgee, owned the Sinclair station across the street from 1937 to 1961. Every Friday night, in the mid 50's, he would take me to Hubbards for a hamburger and for everyone who ever tasted one I'm sure they would agree it was the worlds best. Damn I miss old Hialeah !

Surprisingly enough, the building in the background on the right hand side of the picture is still standing. There are a few early Hialeah buildings, homes and apartments scattered in that one section of the city. Everything else is but a memory. Once they built those two disgusting condos off Okeechobee Road, ALOT of Hialeah's history was lost.
Sorry for reposting, but I had way too many spelling and grammatical errors in my previous post.

Thanks for your comments, rainroosty. It's a labor of love and I wish I had more time to get a ton of photos up for everyone to enjoy.

I love old photos, and especially ones that show restaurants or prices of yesteryear.
Your galleries are terrific and I thank you for them. ~V~
(I've had you in my 'favorites' for years)
