02-02-09 - Butterfly Blue "Brush" Strokes

This is an antique piece of Vietnamese artwork I obtained years ago at an auction. The "brush" strokes are moth and butterfly wings. This just a small portion of it. I have never seen anything like this before or since aquiring it, and the sentimentalist in me hopes (probably unreasonably) that the butterflies and moths were already expired and their wings were "recycled."

Really interesting! The blue looks like our Morphos in Costa Rica. I wonder if they have them in Vietnam too? I'll have to look it up.

No wonder the blue is so pretty & silky - so unusual! Hope they were recycled though...

Frequently they are. As beautiful as they are, they live a very short adult cycle of life. We have a collection in Lexan sealed boxes that were collected at the end of their life from the sanctuary in Key West. A local artist collects them at the end of their life and creatively arranges them in these boxes.

This is a beautiful work of art.

Incredible....i am sad a little bit to see wings that no longer can fly and the Mariposa Azul wings are the ones of my favourite butterfly... Superb and unique creation though. Fantastic capture (photo).
A precious tableau...

Cool piece of art! (with the exception that butterflies were sacrificed) Very delicate and nice brilliant touch of blue. Be nice to see the full picture. Really unusual. Nice entry.
