Thracian tombs near the villages of Starosel and Svestari (Sveshtari).
There are more than 3,000 thracian tombs on the territory of Bulgaria.
Less than 10% are being officially opened and explored by archeologists.
The Sveshtari tomb is situated 2 km southwest of the village of Sveshtari
and 42km northwest of Razgrad. It was discovered in 1982 in the excavations
on the tall Glinina mound near the village. It constitutes a Thracian – Hellenistic
tomb of the first half of 1st century AD. This is a king’s tomb in which in all
probability Drumihed, ruler of the Gets was buried. It’s made up of polished stone
slabs of soft chalk and consist of a Corridor and three square chambers: hall ,
aside room and a grave chamber - all very well preserved but everything wrought
in precious metals was looted as far back as antiquity.
Unfortunately the tour operator at Svestari didn't allow any photography
inside the tomb and the post cards of the tomb are not making a good justice
of the place which is disappointing, because this is the best preserved
and maintained thracian tomb I've visited.
