The Belogradchik Rocks (Bulgarian: Belogradchishki skali) are a group of bizarrely shaped sandstone, and limestone rock formations located near the town of Belogradchik in northwest Bulgaria. The rocks vary in color from primarily red to gray to yellow - it's the great amount of iron oxide, or hematite, which gave the rocks their rusty red color. Some of the rocks reach up to 200 m in height. Many rocks have very weird shapes and are associated with interesting legends. They are often named after people or objects - Madonna, The Rider, The Monks, The Lion, The Bear, Adam and Eva, ...etc.
The Kaleto Fortress was built/used in ancient times (1-3 century), first by the Romans and later by the Byzantine Empire to guard the strategic paths in the mountain area. The fortress was extended by the Bulgarians. The fortress, named Belgrad at that time, was one of the last fortresses to be taken over by the Turks at the end of the 14th century. In the period since 1805 till 1837, the Kaleto Fortress was extended and reconstructed to allow the use of fire guns.
