Twins

Kincaid bikepath, Anchorage

Moose in areas of abundant food generally bear two calves. Triplets are rare. I've seen photos of cows with four and even five calves, but my suspicion, from watching the urban moose in Kincaid, is that the extra calves come from the cow's daughters of two years earlier. The daughters stay close to mom and either leave the calves with mom to babysit, or else the dominant older cow hijacks the youngsters. Keep in mind that I am not a scientist. But I do stay at the Spenard Holiday Inn Express when I'm in Anchorage. A vestige of umbilical cord is just visible on the belly of the left-side moosie. These calves were probably two days old.
