For two summers I observed and photographed the moose in Kincaid Park and along the bike path from Earthquake Park. I kept saying to myself that the huge number of calves was going to draw bears. Finally, one day in May just after the calves were born (they are all born on the same day, mostly) I saw what I thought was a black lab running thru a swamp. Dog walkers need to keep their dogs on leash when the calves are new, cause any dog will attack calves. I was mad and prepared to give some dog person a stern lecture. Then the "lab" stuck his head up and he was no lab! He got up onto the bike path and I started following him, finding that he was comfy if I was about 20 yards behind him. If I got closer than that he'd turn around and walk toward me. I'd take my cue and back up and he'd turn and go the other way. This went on for about two hours. At one point a pair of bull moose chased him up a tree. The cyclist in the distance was waiting for the bear to get off the path. For a joke I shouted "It's OK, he's my bear and he's not dangerous!" The cyclist, apparently a city boy, believed me and started riding toward us. I had to tell him I was joking.
