The aborigines used to roast the young stems and roots before eating them.
This unique plant forms a tall clump of sword-like leaves up to 2-metres long,
extending to 3-metres accross as the plant ages. The immense flower spike rises
to 6-metres and bears at its apex a large cluster of bright red flowers, each
flower is up to 10-cm in diameter and they open continuously over many months.
The Gymea Lily may take about six years to flower.
My lily is older than 6-years - perhaps this Christmas it will bear
its first bloom!
I love the sound the leaves make in the wind!
