Shichishū-jō 七州城

Toyota, Aichi-ken, Japan view map

Also referred to as Koromo-jō (taken from the old name of modern Toyota city) Shichishū Castle was first built in 1782 by the Naitō family that governed the region. Demolished in 1871 after the Meiji Restoration, the site was left vacant until 1978 when the pictured tower was rebuilt. Most of the former castle grounds are now occupied by the Toyota Municipal Museum of Art, though remnant walls remain. According to some, the wood used to construct the dashi-kura (festival storehouses) for the Koromo Matsuri was taken from the castle after its dismantling.
