The tall portion of the building is the original fanhouse, built shortly after the Tunnel was completed in 1888. Two Concrete block additions were later made to the building on the westside.
The railroad decided to construct an expensive and complicated fan system at the west portal of the Winston Tunnel. A 25MPH wind was generated by the fan that was designed to push smoke out ahead of eastbound trains as they passed thru the tunnel.
