If anyone is looking for pictures of the tunnel, check any public library for a book called The Corn Belt Route which is a history of the CGW. Also, in the late 90's, (I think) the Chicago and North Western Historical Society magazine ran a story on the tunnel. Lot of good photos. Contact them. They might have back issues.

I just viewed your Winston Tunnel photos and I am wondering if anyone has photos/sketches of the fan house before it fell apart? Looks like several additions were built... any thoughts on that?
Thanks for the great comments and photos!

Mr. Manon,
I enjoyed viewing your photos of the Winston Tunnel. I first visited the tunnel in January 1972 on a very cold day, soon after moving to Galena. You could still walk inside the tunnel then, and we remember seeing large stalagtites and stalagmites of ice in the middle. Somewhere, I have photos from that trip, which include the old fan house.
We returned there often in the early-mid 70s, taking family hikes when our kids were small. We'd walk across the trestle and explore the stone house underneath. I hadn't been back to the area in probably 25 years until this morning (10/07/07), when my dog and I explored it anew. I was under the impression that it was all private property until a friend recently told me the DNR now oversees it, and it's open to hiking again.
Looking forward to seeing your other shots when you get them posted.
