model "diesel" innards

Marengo, NY

An electric start, 9 hp Kohler gas engine powers a hydrostatic drive, which is connected to all four axles via chain and a universal jointed drive shaft.

Rio Grande and Southern Pacific (now both UP drones) tried several German-made
diesel hydraulic locomotives back in the early 60's. They didn't stand up to the 24/7 operation that US railroads do. They were scrapped, don't think any even made it to any museums. Diesel-electric and traction motors - US railroading
