Long-billed Dowitcher, spring breeding plumage

Alviso

The bill is quite long, though perhaps not enough to be diagnostic of Long-billed. The strong black/white/chestnut pattern on the upperparts is more characteristic of Long-billed; Short-billed more often has a more muted brown and buff pattern. There are a few bars on the side of the breast; the many spots are toward the middle of the breast, where both LB and west coast SB have spots. The diagnostic white-tipped feathers on the flanks and breast are mostly hidden behind the wing, but they can be seen on a close look at the feathers just below the wing bend.
