What a lens! Have had the non-is and was very pleased with it. But the IS is great, used it with a monopod at 1/25th.... With the 1.4 EX converter (Sigma) still razorsharp wide-open.

After receiving another bad copy of this optik I can´t recommend it. Maybe USA get all the good ones. ;o)

Have just purchased this lens and what a cracker of lens it is - lovely and sharp wide open ,IS works very well. I use it with a 1D11N and 5DMK11 and it makes a superb match with both of them. Have used it for landscapes, great for some compression of scenes, good for sports (would love an f2.8 but then who would`nt and I am not convinced the extra price is equal to the quality of what you can produce with f4).I would highly recommend this lens to anyone who requires this focal length, great performance, nice weight ,IS and you can still put 1.4 extender and have AF.

My former optik, with a red and green fringe. I wish to know if it is normal, or just a bad kopi i had. ??????????????http://www.pbase.com/jan_pro/canon_300mm_4

What a classic lens ! Great for Birding, wildlife and sports. Not too heavy to carry around, either.
Mine makes funny clunking noises when the I.S. engages, but apparently that is normal for this model.
It Works well with Teleconverters (1.4x or 2x - although you will lose AF with the latter).
You can even use it for Astronomy:

Jupiter:

(I used TWO teleconverters to get the 1200mm FL !!)

Yep! What a phantastic lens! Indeed it can be used for stiching panos, as you may see:

You may want to read the caption regarding the repeating bird in the shot (at semi microscopical level)
This lens and the EF-S 10-22mm allow you to enter into a different photographic dimension.

If you want a so-so long focal length, light, sharp lens with IS, look no further. This lens can be used to stitch panos:

http://www.pbase.com/snoyes/image/50040927 (not stitched)

and of course the standard telephoto stuff:

I really like using this lens. It is easy to carry, the IS is effective and it has stellar image quality.

This is my favorite lens. I could not carry the heavier long range teles, and it was a hard decision for me. In the end, I chose this because it was lighter than the zooms.

Having previouly used the 75-300 IS zoom, I was leary of getting another 300mm prime, because I may miss the 70-300 range of shooting. But the clarity and colors are so true for this 300 prime, I don't look back.

Easy to handle, not so bulky. Fast, impressive photos. Even when I add a 1.4 teleconverter shooting in the 500mm range on my 20D. I use the f4 alot, no problem, great clarity. Awesome lens for the price.

If you can't spring for the 300 F2.8, then don't worry. As long as you aren't shooting at night this lens is AWESOME! World-class quality! Blows the doors off my 70-200 F2.8 L IS USM in terms of auto focus and reach, quality might be a tad better too, in terms of sharpness. This is my favorite lens!

Such a fantastic motosports and birding lens. One of my favorite Canon lenses so far.

My most favourite lens. Sharp even at f/4 - better at 5.6. Excellent for wildlife shots. Image stabiliser helps too!

Sharp at wide open, rich color and very excelence resolution.
very very little (only on color and contrast) when combine with EF1.4x
become 420mm. f5.6 with IS function, good choice for started lens for bird photo
