Hawaii North Shore : Week 9

Oahu, Hawaii

I decided on another 3:1 panoramic of some surfers. I have no idea who these kids were but they were having some serious fun. This is on the Northern shore of Oahu where there were some very serious waves that day. I had really been wishing I had my 2X extender.... Oh well.

The pano's, with the exception of two, are all stitches:-) The two that are simply cropped images are the surfing shot and the pronghorn sheep. I think I confuse people into thinking the surfing was a pano. Sorry.

I am most fascinated on how you can get the waves to keep still for multiple shots!

As for the surfing shots, I did shoot one shot and see at 0 EV compensation, I had a small amount of blown highlights in the water. So I backed down the exposure to -1/3 in matrix metering and shot away. I find that with all my lenses (except my 16-35) that the 1D is typically with 1/2 stop when used in matrix metering.

The pano's are totally different. On those I chimp the darkest and brightest parts and then determine the compromise. Many times, I have to take multiple exposures at -2, -1, 0 and 1 for example and then blend them.

Steven: Can you please explain how you metered exposure for this shot? Also the Havasupai Falls that you emailed me, remember? That image tops the chart in this regard.

- Thanks, Karthik.

Me??? It was all the camera, I tell you!!! All the Camera. No for real, while I did have to think the 1D is an amazing piece of equipment and it DOES make a big difference.

Thanks again.

Steven: I really suspect if you got the magic in your hands. I am really amazed how well you ahve metered exposure in this shot. The surfers are vivid at the same time the texture on the waters is so good.

Thanks for sharing. - Karthik
