Bald Eagles 12_15_05.jpg

Wanda and I took a short drive up a nearby canyon. We saw about a dozen bald eagles, more deer than we could count, wild turkeys and one nice bull elk. All of that within 15 minutes of home. Life is good...oh, and cold.

Have to love five frames a second...two more eagle shots http://www.pbase.com/slowpokebill/image/53600165 and http://www.pbase.com/slowpokebill/image/53600258

The bull elk putting some space between us and him http://www.pbase.com/slowpokebill/image/53600359

Graham, I shot these in RAW, white balance set to cloudy and converted with CaptureOne LE. I bumped the saturation 4%. I used the "as shot" white balance. Exposure was correct and needed no tweaking in post. Pretty much I just cropped, down sized for the web and did a minor pass of Unsharp Mask Filter to make up for the down size. Then I converted from ProPhoto RGB to sRGB and went from 16 bit to 8 bit.

Steve, these birds winter here; along with thousands more here and there in Utah. These birds fish the small river in the canyon bottom.
Steve Patterson16-Dec-2005 13:47
Question...do the Bald Eagles winter there? Or are these on the way south? Our eagle population is so large now that a few even stay the winter on the Mississippi river here in the cold north, but the vast majority go south for the winter (like a lot of the people here, too). Is there open water for them all winter in northern Utah?

I have to respectfully disagree with Henry. I think the solid background alleviates all distractions, allowing the viiewer full details of these glorious birds. Great job Bill.

Very nicely captured. Only thing that could have made for a better shot would be some couds or mountains, but still, it's excellent.

Think 5 fps is cool, try 8.5!

Bill, simply awesome! I've only seen one bald eagle and it was at some great distance. Gotta love that 300mm lens. Thanks for sharing your great work.

Fitz...I'm sorry I couldn't get you closer to your first eagle yesterday. Sometimes in the next few days we'll have to get together again. Maybe I'll be able to get you close enough for a good chance at a photo.

Amazing shots. I've seen only ONE bald eagle in the wild and I can't get shots like you do. Thanks Bill.

Terrific eagle shots....the lighting on the underside of the wing is great. And the eyes are great...to me that is what makes a good eagle image. Glad you had a nice day off.
