Bear Cubs Up a Tree 05_22_05.jpg

When we first saw these black bear cubs they were napping here in the tree and the mother was napping at the base of the tree. After about an hour the cubs climbed down. The mother rolled over and they nursed for about 20 minutes then she sent them back up the tree. Then she went back to sleep.

This reminds me of the trip my family took to Yellowstone when I was in high school (a long time ago). A ranger gave a little talk about how dangerous the bears were. But then he told this little joke:
"How do you tell black bears from brown bears since there are brown black bears and black brown bears. Well black bears can climb trees and brown bears can't. So you sneak up behind the bear and kick him in the butt. Then run and climb the nearest tree. If it climbs up after you, it's a black bear."
