Our Moon 04_14_05.jpg

On one level there is nothing special about this photo of the moon. Then again it is "Our Moon". No matter who you are and where you are in the world; if you look up tonight, you will see the same moon I do. We watch the same sun rise and set each day. We live on the same world. We all have the same hopes, the same dreams for ourselves and our families.

Sometimes I think it is important to remember, we are much more the same than different; no matter where we are tonight looking at "Our Moon".

I shot this, with the moon in this orientation, in a landscape orientation. It is about a third of a frame crop.

How much was cropped out? Did the moon fill the image sensor at 600mm?

Yeh, we’ve more in common with our fellow man than differences – if only we’d realise it.
Bill, I know I don’t have a long enough lens for this, only 250mm on the Dimage5 [though I’m looking for a tele-converter] but no matter how many times I try I can’t get anything approaching this quality.
Having looked at the exif info from a number of shots I’ve tried all sorts of setting but as I write this I think the light may have come on. Because I can’t zoom this close, I should use spot metering from the moon rather than an average as you have [and I have in the past]. Any thoughts?

Bill, this is a terrific shot of the moon using a camera. I've been an amateur astronomer for a number of years now and wished I'd had the money for a decent CCD camera for astrophotography, but they were a couple thousand dollars for a mediocre one. Prices have dropped significantly, but instead I bought the Canon Digital Rebel XT and some accessories so that I might get more seriously back into photography with something other than a point-and-shoot camera. I do plan on buying an adaptor to allow me to engage in some prime-focus photography using my digital SLR attatched to my telescope. I just have to wait for my shipment to get here. With any luck, in another month I can start my astrophotography experiments.
