Burning Boxes, Shanghai 2005

I can't explain this, but I can describe what I saw...down a dark alleyway in Dongjiadu (old town) about 10:30pm, I came accross this scene...buddhist monks burning what looked like boxes (beer and other things). I can only imagine it was a funeral or something..my instinct took over and I started to shoot...most of the people around me were amused as they often are..one guy who was drunk told me stop..having taken four pictures I moved on....the monks had finished their chanting by then and moved back in to a house. I wonder...is this how a poor man's spirit is put to rest in this rich city?

Is that one of their fellow monks recycling on his way to Nirvana?

The seven monks on fire! Four musicians, two servants and one master. Great lively capture... with the eighth element, the fire, a little bit frigthening, so powerful... (we can see a face on him... like in every fire, I think!;)

It is actually that paradox, as in a road accident: the Samaritan helps, the ordinary guy ogles, but the photographer, ah, the photographer takes the picture!!!!

I would love to be able to travel and shoot here. It seems as though there is always something going on (everywhere). Love the red. Regards Kal!
