Eventually the wind picked up to 10 to 15 knots.... just enough breeze to get Shibumi's attention. However, the wind was right on the bow; no good for sailing into. Initially we responded like most crusiers, most NOT all, and were motoring on a straight line from one GPS waypoint to the next. Going point to point is fine for a power boat... but we are a sailboat. So eventually it came to me to raise the sails and tack back and forth across the wind. We had to fall off of the wind 30-45 degrees to get a good angle on the moving air, but the sail was was exhilarating and according to GPS readings it only added 17 minutes to the 7 hour trip to Staniel Cay. | |
