3/29: Book Worm

I saw this kid at the park today. There were dozens of other kids running around playing and shouting.
This boy didn't move the whole time I was there except to tell the other kids to leave him alone when they came up and picked on him.

Voted - this is a great shot.

Great candid portrait. How wonderful to be so engrossed that the rest of the world just disappears.
Anna Yu03-Apr-2005 19:31
He's so engrossed in the book that he pays no attention to the photographer. Very good photo of that magic moment. Vote.

ME as a KID! Nice capture

He is so totally engrossed, he doesn't care about his unkempt hair. Who can blame him. A first class capture, Jeremy.
Guest 31-Mar-2005 21:26
Excellent. I wonder what he's reading.
Guest 31-Mar-2005 14:43
What a great shot.
Well done indeed.

This really is excellent and is so evocative for me.
Guest 31-Mar-2005 04:08
Great B&W, it looks like a "classic" photo.
Guest 31-Mar-2005 03:26
I love this image. It reminds me of... hmmm.. me. A misfit but content all the same.
Guest 30-Mar-2005 22:28
Great texture everywhere, but his hair is the best! What do you rekon, doctor or lawyer in a few years?
Guest 30-Mar-2005 19:47
Great shot, he makes me think of Harry Potter! I agree with everyone else, the tones in this are awesome.
Guest 30-Mar-2005 18:40
great image, i like very much the expression of the boy, he's absolutely concentrated!! great b&w too... perhaps i't cut a piece on the right side...
JeremyGood30-Mar-2005 18:19
Oh good, I was hoping someone would recognize the book!
All the other kids will be working for this kid one day, so he'll get his chance.

Thanks everyone for the kind comments.

Jeremy this is a wonderful candid & that book in the boys hand tells you a lot about him when you know what he's reading. It is book 3 of a series by Jean Craighead George, titled 'Frightful's Mountain '
Frightful is a peregrine falcon that has been hand raised by a boy in the Catskill mountains and is faster & more agile than any other bird or beast in the world...

This boy is already smarter than the others who teased him...they just don't know it.

wow, wow and WOW here !!!
I LOVE THIS !!!
excellent portrait&capture.
bravo...
ciao

nice portrait, and nice caption too! it's sad to hear about kids being cruel to one another, and the irony is that this kid will probably be just fine when he's all grown up, that you would never know he was a book worm or anything else.
Guest 30-Mar-2005 15:40
he was posing for your shot.. little did he know!
Leo Charette30-Mar-2005 15:04

Wonderful capture. I hope he grows up to show the others that he knew best.
Guest 30-Mar-2005 11:09
Great detail ... I can't quite work out what he is reading, but it must be good! :)
don nieman30-Mar-2005 10:54
Great composition and exposure.
Guest 30-Mar-2005 10:13
interesting subject and well captured. obviously wants to be in the crowd (with those sneakers) but is in another world of his own. nice little story.
Antonis Sarantos30-Mar-2005 09:58
This is an excellent b&w portrait Jeremy. I like the lighting and toning balance as much as the composition!
Guest 30-Mar-2005 06:18

Must be a grat book!
This is a wonderful B/W ... great tones!
Karen Leaf30-Mar-2005 04:19
What ever you do with your b/w needs to be patented 'cuz this is great.
snootydog30-Mar-2005 04:13
Poor kid. I'm glad he told them to go away but I am guessing that sometimes it doesn't work. This is a wonderful photo -- you got a great range of tones.
Chris30-Mar-2005 04:03
Great shot. Love his intensity. It fits your BW process well.
Guest 30-Mar-2005 03:37
Well seen! Great capture. Alone with a book, a universal theme ;-)
