The fire horses: Grace, Hope and Wylie Coyote

I was able to visit with the three fire horses at the event (below/previous picture) and was literally stunned by their enormous size: Not only were they incredibly tall, but they weighed about 1,800 pounds each. I had only ever met horses in Iceland before, which were about the size of ponies, but these fire horses seemed like twice their size.

We recently attended an event at on North Carolina Avenue SE and at Lincoln Park to commemorate the last time — 100 years ago — horse-drawn carriages were used to respond to emergencies.

One hundred years ago, on June 15, 1925, the DC Fire Department held a ceremonial “Last Run of the Horses” to commemorate the service of the great fire horses, who were no longer needed due to the creation of motorized fire trucks.

What a handsome trio. Looks like the one in the center is saying something to the one on his right.
