Cassowaries are flightless birds native to New Guinea, the Aru Islands and northeastern Australia. The southern cassowary is the third tallest and second heaviest living bird, smaller only than the ostrich and emu. They are very wary of humans, but if provoked, are capable of inflicting serious, even fatal, injury to both dogs and people. The cassowary has been labeled “the world’s most dangerous bird.”
We saw this cassowary at what at the time was known as Hartley’s Croc Zoo.
