Tentatively exploring a new world

Since I got up the courage to get close to this guy, I’ll post his noisy portrait. He’s one of billions of Brood X cicadas that are emerging after 17 years underground across the Eastern US. I can’t wait for their deafening month above ground to be over, although the noise hasn't really started in our neighborhood yet.

Best to view in "Original" because other versions resized by Pbase are decidedly
unsharp.

P(otomac) Avenue is for penguin, posted earlier:

Amazing to see one even if you’re getting deaf from their noise.

It is incredible that the larva of this cicada spends 17 years underground. Beautiful capture. V

bravo for getting so near to it, although in truth it appears as harmless as it is fascinating...rather a cicada chorus than the drone of traffic...

Let him have his noisy day, he's waited 17 years for this, and someone will probably eat him before he gets lucky.

Wow, that's close. I think the noise adds to the image. VV

They are so much more beautiful than our cicadas, and ours are not very noisy because there are never many at a time, but I can imagine millions of them calling at once! V

a beauty ! V
