Last night I saw a cicada on our deck after a heavy rain, struggling to flip itself over, although even if it had managed to do so, I doubt it could have flown away since it was water logged. I’m terrified of insects and would never willingly touch one, but I felt sorry for the poor little guy (and Tim didn’t take several hints to help it), so I guess it stayed there all night. It was gone this morning, most certainly eaten by a bird, and all that was left were its wings.
I did notice several dead cicadas on the pavement during our walk this evening, so perhaps they don’t do well in heavy rain. All in all, though, for some unknown reason, Capitol Hill seems to have been spared the huge invasion of these insects that other areas have experienced. Maybe it’s because we have so many birds resident here, the cicadas never had a chance.
