The Old Naval Hospital, now the Hill Center, was built in 1866 to accommodate military patients. After the hospital moved uptown in 1906, the building became a home for veterans but subsequently fell into disuse and was vacant for many years. Restoration began in 2010, and as the Hill Center, is a center of education and community life on Capitol Hill.
We attended their annual pottery fair last weekend and were impressed with the work done on the building and its transformation into a vital part of the community. I remember photographing it in 2009, when it was vacant and a place you wouldn’t want to enter, even if you could.
