Rediscovering Home: Washington, D.C.

We have just moved back to the States after three years in Budapest and almost three in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, with the US State Department. I’m trying not to redo my previous galleries of Washington and the surrounding area, including https://pbase.com/helenpb/washington_dc_a_capital_city and https://pbase.com/helenpb/rediscovering_capitol_hill__washington_d_c and https://pbase.com/helenpb/the_lights_of_washington and https://pbase.com/helenpb/washington_dcbeyond_the_beltway so hope I can find some interesting new things to photograph this time around!

Wow! I've lived in the DC area (Germantown,MD and now Gettysburg PA) for over 40 years, and I don't think I've see half of the things you've photographed -- at least from the perspective of your images. Thanks for sharing. V.

Came across this recently: "... on paper the capital looked magnificent - in reality little had been achieved by the time Humboldt arrived in summer 1804. With only 4,500 inhabitants, Washington was about the same size as Jena .... and not what foreigners associated with the capital of a huge country such as the United States. The roads were in a terrible state, and so littered with rocks and tree stumps that carriages regularly overturned. Red mud stuck to wheels and axles like glue, and anyone who walked risked sinking knee-deep in the ubiquitous puddles." p99 in 'The Invention of Nature.
