12 May
Ibuprofen

I read in the *news* yesterday that there are more suicides in May than any other month. That got me thinking ..... I always buy my Ibuprofen when I'm on trips to the US because it's still possible to buy these 100 tablet sized bottles. Here in the UK we can only buy small packets of about 12. But at the other extreme I bought the white bottle in Mexico when I was ill there - each tablet is 600mg instead of the usual 200mg and I had to bite them in half because I was scared to take so much in one go!!! Makes me wonder about the nanny state that we live in and what the evidence is for some of the policies that 'protect us'. If I was determined to commit suicide i don't think I'd be put off by the need to travel to four or five different chemists to buy the goods. We ought to be doing more to address the causes.

Oh by the way.... I am trying to keep up with commenting but PBase seems to be having a slow phase - it's taken 30 minutes to load this photo properly so please bear with me.

What is the dose to dull the pain of waiting when pbase grinds to a halt? Great lighting.

The world is most definitely very different when it comes to meds!

Great job capturing the colors and lighting.

Prescribed ibuprofen is available here at 800mg so don't worry about the Mexican one. Ibuprofen isn't an 'easy' suicide option - paracetamol is much more dangerous. You're more likely to get an ulcer from these.

Advil sounds like a state in the US!
Bill Miller13-May-2005 19:22
A good single malt whisky (without the Advil !) usually does the trick for me. Perhaps you ought to feed some to your modem to speed it up....

Interesting fact about suicide in May. Perhaps people decide if they can't enjoy this most beautiful month, what's the use. Can you kill yourself with NSAIDs? Anyway, love the photo.

Why in May... It's so wonderful month, don't you think?
We always learn something new from you Gail! Keep up taking good photos.

In Canada, you can buy Codeine over the counter, so who knows ...
I prefer Aleve, and of course, anything illegal.

I have an empty bottle of Advil sitting on my counter to remind me I need to buy a refill. forgot to get it again today ;^(

Nice shot. When I ran Cross Country and Track, in high school, we called it Vitamin I. We took alot of it, to keep down on the muscle soreness and it allowed is to push to the point with out it we would have surely gotten stress injuries. It was crazy the lengths we went to, to win. But nothing like what kids in high school do today with steroids.

Per the Facts and Comparison the max dosage is 3200mg or 3.2 grams in a 24 hour period. In the U.S. Ibuprofen is over the counter at 200mg per tablet and up to 500 tabs in a bottle. In the U.S. the prescription strengths are 400mg, 600mg, and 800mg with normal max dosage being IBU 800mg 1 PO QID (Take one tablet by mouth four times daily). Did you know that Ibuprofen is the prefered medication for relief of pain from sunburn? Ooopps I have rambled, get me talking about Pharmacy stuff and I do that.

Great commentary! I'd never have known about the 12 caplet rule.
Next trip over to the UK I'll bring some extra strength, extra large bottles
as "foreign aid".

interesting commentary, and i totally agree, they should be addressing the issues rather than imposing restrictions on everyone. limiting people to 12 caplets only goes to increase the cost (economy of scale). the photo is a good illustration. i like posts like these. :)

I thought you were having a bad day. :)
Guest 12-May-2005 22:55
I believe that 600mg (maybe 800mg) was the prescription strength before these went over the counter.
Do people really try to kill themselves with this stuff? Seems like it would take a boatload to get the job done.

You are right about addressing the causes bit Gail. So what do we do about stress? I know, we'll set up a working party that you'll have to attend in addition to all your other working parties and once we've finished we'll dump the report in the archives.

I wondered if you were having a bad day :)
