This is a scene of Jacob, who has fallen asleep while on his way to Haran, having a dream of angels going up and down a ladder (here shown as a staircase) that reaches into heaven. Below the ladder there is a depiction of Jacob wrestling an angel. It seems these two scenes, though years apart, were always depicted together in Byzantine painting.
